Originally from Damvillers (Meuse), Jules Bastien-Lepage studied in Verdun and later at the Paris School of Fine Arts, under Alexandre Cabanel. Unsuccessful in his bid to win the Grand Prix de Rome, the painter attracted the attention of his contemporaries from the moment he started submitting his work to the Salon. His career is hailed by the harshest critics, including Emile Zola, and by the most zealous collectors the world over. Despite his early death at the age of 36, he showed an originality in his subjects, compositions and technique that had an immediate and enduring influence on pictorial art in France, Europe, the US and Australia. Discover it.
